Overview

At The Home Depot, I worked across multiple streams of work. Still, my capacity as a full stack UX designer was best seen in my time across three key work streams: 1. The refinement and redesign of the retail giant's truck rental system and infrastructure 2. UI refinement and validation of a single sign-on portal for employees to streamline access to proprietary tools & 3. Collaboration with the reporting team to provide highly specialised research insights into the performance metrics of the paint team, a 2 million USD/day department.

Called a consultant, more like a mercenary

Joining the team at The Home Depot Enterprise I was able to bounce and contribute in many different areas, expanding my knowledge and influence wherever I was needed. Even as an 'apprentice' new to the field I was able to commit patterns to the design system & collaborate across departments.

Let's look at those 3 core areas though:

*Note: Logos here have been scrubbed but belong to The Home Depot

  1. "Renting a truck kinda sucks…"

  1. "Renting a truck

    kinda sucks…"

I'm paraphrasing, the actual quote was more like:

‘Renting a truck is a long process at the moment...’

‘Renting a truck is a long
process at the moment...’

But also every process kinda sucks before getting some UX love…

Challenge

Refine the truck rental process for the largest home improvement chain in the US, making rental seamless for existing rental department associates. Evaluate the infrastructure and map out possibilities of franchising partnerships through business strategy mapping and stakeholder alignment.

Challenge

Assist in the UI refinement of a seamless integration feature, allowing store associates to access internal tools quickly and without strain, so they could focus on e the customer faster.

  1. Contextualised performance insights.

Extensive research and thurough analysis and for what?

Better guidance and tools for managers to guide the growth of their department that's what!

I was intimately involved in design team collaboration to deliver localised departmental performance insights. All that and a bit of an upgrade for UI flair too while we're at it.

In Conclusion

I was able to make a significant impact as a collaborator and individual owner of several teams within The Home Depot as a mobile contractor. Through guerrilla testing, rapid prototyping & validation, service blueprinting, and stakeholder alignment facilitation my projects saw success in all areas.
